2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full message from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
His management and experience in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all excited to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and tests that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as development progresses.
